Narkevičius’ work questions the perception of history and the (im)possibility of objectivity and challenges what a documentary is, can or should be. The role of the image and the role and responsibility of the author are both at stake. Hito Steyerl’s work narrates the complexity of retaining, protecting, constructing, and the re-assemblage of history and memory. The film highlights the fragmentary aspects that compose a sense of reality, the entanglement of the acts of remembering and forgetting, particularly in the absence of evidence and archives.

In both films, the act of creating images, of drawing, of giving form is inevitably bound to the voice and gesture of the artist/author and the responsibility such an act - or expression - entails.
Deimantas Narkevičius was born in 1964 in Utena, Lithuania and lives and works in Vilnius. Originally trained as a sculptor, he has mainly been working on storytelling using film and video. His central focus is an exploration of history with a current and subjective point of view. History itself has become his methodology and his primary material. Deimantas Narkevičius thinks of history as material for art that is alive. According to him, a work of art can always be thought of as an examination of other subjects. This is the crossroad where he positions his work.

Hito Steyerl was born in 1966 in München, Germany and lives and works in Berlin. She works as filmmaker and author in the area of essayist documentary film / video, media art and video installation. The works are located on the interface between cinema and fine arts, and between theory and practice. They center on the question of media within globalisation and the migration of sounds and images. She also has written a book about documentary in the art-field and edited several others.
